Shoe Pain

Podiatric surgery residency interview case. Work through it the way you would at an interview: take the history, ask for the exam and imaging, then commit to a diagnosis and plan.

Chief complaint

"My bunion hurts in every shoe I own."

46-year-old female with a painful bunion, seen in clinic.

History of present illness

Several years of progressively worsening pain over the medial left 1st MPJ, worse in closed and dress shoes, better barefoot. Tried wider shoes, padding, orthoses and NSAIDs for over 6 months without relief.

Questions a strong candidate asks at this step

  • Location, duration, character of pain
  • Shoe gear
  • Conservative treatment tried
  • Lesser-toe or ball-of-foot pain
  • Patient expectations

Present the rest of the case
